Dr. Foch Smart

Dr. Smart (and wife Lori)

Background:

Dr. Foch Smart was born and grew up in Metairie, Louisiana (a suburb of New Orleans).  He graduated from the University of New Orleans in Civil Engineering.  He worked as a structural engineer for five years and even became a licensed professional engineer (P.E.) in Louisiana.(Click here to see an example of one of his engineering projects.) He jokes that he took the "trial and error approach" to careers.  As a result, he encourages all of his young patients to spend time with someone actually working in the field they are interested in before going to college!

Education:

Dr. Smart attended dental school at LSU School of Dentistry in New Orleans and completed a three-year residency in Orthodontics at the University of Tennessee.  He graduated first in his class from Orthodontic Residency and also won the Chairman's Award for Excellence in Orthodontic research.

Private Practice:

Dr. Smart has been practicing orthodontics in Montgomery, Alabama since 1995.  He truly LOVES his work as an orthodontist!   He says he feels extremely fortunate that he has the opportunity to earn a living doing something he enjoys so much.   He is extremely thankful to his wife Lori for all of the sacrifices she made to allow him to go back to school to pursue a career in Orthodontics.   Dr. Smart says that although there are many reasons he loves being an orthodontist, probably the greatest reason is the chance to get to know and build relationships with his patients.

Personal:

Dr. Smart and his wife Lori have three grown children and 6 (adorable) grandchildren!  Being a grandparent is (way) better than can be described!!   Dr. Smart's hobbies are running (reluctantly :), ultimate frisbee and computer programming.  He also describes himself as a "wanna-be" youth minister and enjoys hanging out with students as much as possible.
